چکیده

This document outlines a number of projects for which I am seeking to recruit graduate students. Of the projects detailed below, the rst three will be conducted in collaboration with Toby Walsh. In general I have a range of research interests to do with knowledge representation , automated reasoning and machine learning. Results are applied to problems in planning, natural language processing, logic programming, constraint satisfaction and optimisation, inductive learning, probabilistic reasoning, and veriication. Much excitement has been generated by the recent success of stochastic local search procedures at nding solutions to large, very hard search problems. Local search procedures move through a space of potential solutions to a problem guided by a heuristic that at each point chooses what appears to be the best move from among the alternatives. It has been found that such a procedure performs much better if at each step, with a predetermineed probability (called the noise setting), it ignores the heuristic and randomly chooses a move from among the set of alternatives SKC94]. Furthermore, our research FP99] has shown that the performance of these stochastic local search procedures varies enormously across the range of noise settings, and the optimal noise setting varies enormously from problem instance to problem instance. This project addresses the question of how we can get the most out of stochastic local search procedures in spite of this great variation of performance. One approach that will be taken is to develop a method for predicting the optimal noise setting for any given problem instance. Another approach that will be taken is to develop a stochastic local search proce

Engineering design education and rehabilitation engineering.

My academic career of more than 50 years has been committed to involving undergraduate and graduate students in the engineering design process [1]. A variety of experiences—childhood model making, vocational high school education, draftsman jobs, and military assignments during World War II—have convinced me that design is best learned by the necessity of reaching wellestablished and defined de...

Systems Engineering Graduate Research as Part of Curriculum - Summary of Research

In this paper, we review and analyze the systems engineering graduate research projects that students have completed as part of their curriculum requirement. The information presented here is gathered over five years. The semester long projects are completed as part of the graduate course titled ‘System Development Workshop’ taught at Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). Students are r...

Research on Graduate Microblogging Virtual Team in Projects Learning

With the rapid expansion of graduate students, higher demand of using information technology in graduate education arises. Based on the analysis of the problem existing in the traditional graduate educational programs, we propose the microblogging virtual learning team for graduate education. We also explore the advantages and characteristics of microblogging virtual learning in project learning.

Software for project-based learning of robot motion planning

Motion planning is a core problem in robotics concerned with finding feasible paths for a given robot. Motion planning algorithms perform a search in the high-dimensional continuous space of robot configurations and exemplify many of the core algorithmic concepts of search algorithms and associated data structures. Motion planning algorithms can be explained in a simplified two-dimensional sett...
